Yellowstone’S Luke Grimes Admits ‘I Was A Mess’ Reading The ‘Heartbreaking’ Finale Script

If the Season 5 finale of Yellowstone turns out to be the series’ finale — and that’s still a big “if” — it won’t just be fans of Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount Network smash who are hard hit, it will be the cast, too. Luke Grimes, who’s played Kayce Dutton since the beginning, didn’t even want to crack open the last script before he absolutely had to do so.

“I mean, it’s the end — the end-end,” he tells TVLine. “I had no idea how the show was going to [wrap up], and I wanted to save reading that episode for the very last second.”

At the moment, it’s looking a lot like Yellowstone’s send-off will also be Kayce’s adopted brother Jamie’s swan song. Kayce is determined to get to the bottom of their father’s murder, and sister Beth is already convinced that the rat she smells is the black sheep of the family.

Whether Kayce is called upon to serve Jamie his just deserts — Beth called dibs — it sounds like we are in for an emotional roller-coaster ride. When at last Grimes read the finale’s script, “I was a mess,” he says. “It’s beautiful. It’s profound. It’s heartbreaking.”

The actor is also confident that viewers will be satisfied by the way Yellowstone goes to the train station. “They won’t feel like they’ve wasted their time for the past six years.”
