Yellowstone star Kelly Reilly revealed occasional disagreements with showrunner Taylor Sheridan over her character, Beth Dutton. As per Insider, Reilly’s insights came to light during a featurette clip included in the Blu-ray and DVD release of Yellowstone Season 5, Part 1. The actor shared her thoughts on the storylines and twists her character has encountered since the show’s inception in 2018.
What makes the creative process of Yellowstone so fascinating, according to Reilly, is that Sheridan, who has penned every episode from season two onwards, doesn’t reveal storyline details in advance. This approach leaves Reilly, like the audience, coming to each development with a fresh perspective.
Despite playing Beth Dutton for over five years, the actor admitted that she is still discovering new aspects of her character. “There are still things that I read and I didn’t expect, or sometimes I wish for something else for her, but that’s the same as the audience,” Reilly shared.
The nature of her character’s journey has certainly been apparent throughout the series. Beth’s tumultuous past has unfolded in a series of moments. From the revelation that she couldn’t have children due to a clandestine operation by her adopted brother to the tragic death of her mother during a horseback ride, Beth’s life has been fraught with heartache and pain.
In the romance department, Beth’s complex personality has caused her to make questionable decisions, particularly in her relationship with Rip Wheeler, portrayed by Cole Hauser. Despite the fan-favorite couple tying the knot in the season four finale, Reilly cast doubt on their future together, hinting at lingering secrets and regrets that might impact their union. “Beth is haunted by her past. She has a lot of regrets and she has a lot of secrets that he doesn’t know,” Reilly revealed, suggesting that their relationship might not reach the happily-ever-after fans hope for.
Yellowstone fans are eagerly waiting for the second half of Season 5, but the ongoing writers’ strike has caused significant production delays. Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton in the series, recently revealed that filming for Season 5B would likely be underway if not for the strike. Grimes expressed his understanding of the situation, emphasizing that resolving the strike takes precedence before they can resume filming. Originally slated to air on Paramount Network in Summer 2023, the release of Season 5B has been indefinitely postponed due to scheduling conflicts with the show’s lead, Kevin Costner.
But the delays don’t end there. Yellowstone’s prequel series, 1923, is facing its setbacks. Production on the second season of the series, starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, has been pushed back indefinitely due to the writers’ strike. Originally set to begin filming at the Butte Civic Center on June 5, the production is now in limbo. The series has reportedly been paying $75,000 a month to keep the Civic Center reserved through the end of 2023, highlighting the impact of the strike on the entertainment industry.
Yellowstone Season 5A previously premiered on Paramount Network, while Season 5B doesn’t yet have a premiere date.
