Yellowstone is due to return to The Paramount Network and Paramount Plus later this year, with the second half of season five due to air on November 10. Fans were heartbroken to hear John Dutton star Kevin Costner had quit the western melodrama after filming conflicts.
He said on Instagram: “It was something that really changed me. I loved it, and I know you loved it. I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning.” He continued: “I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop, and I’ll see you at the movies.”
The star explained how he could not continue filming Yellowstone after spending the past year and a half directing and starring in the film Horizon. Fans said they could not imagine Yellowstone without its lead character and they are interested to see how John Dutton will be written out of the series.
The drama had been on hiatus since January 2023 as it became uncertain whether the Dances with Wolves actor would reprise his role. It was not until June this year that a release date for the next batch of episodes was finally set.
Following this, fans are still keen to find out whether the series will continue beyond season five. Here is all you need to know about the show’s future.
Will there be a season 6 of Yellowstone?
Sadly, there will not be a sixth season of Yellowstone as Paramount confirmed the upcoming episodes will be the show’s swan song, with the series coming to an end after season five.
In May 2023 it was announced Yellowstone was going back into production, but the remaining episodes would mark an end to the beloved series.
However, there were new plans to continue the Dutton franchise with a Yellowstone sequel series, widely reported to star Matthew McConaughey.
The series was rumoured to be slated for December 2023 but following the writers’ strike in 2023, it was taken off the table for the time being.
Paramount Network previously confirmed two more spinoffs are in the works – a present-day story and another prequel, 1944, that will follow 1883 and 1923.
1923 was given a second and final season, which was scheduled to air in conjunction with the final season of Yellowstone.
The show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, also revealed he was planning several more prequels, telling The Hollywood Reporter: “I think there will be enough for many more [prequels] — three or four. Chris McCarthy trusts me, because I haven’t been wrong yet.”
