Yellowstone star Wes Bentley doesn’t see a happy ending coming for the series anytime soon. The owners of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch have been finding themselves in turmoil, and it’s only growing worse as John Dutton (Kevin Costner) considers giving up the family ranch. As the Duttons continue fighting among themselves, it looks like the show is heading in an ever-darker direction.
While Bentley would love a happy ending for the show, it doesn’t look like it will be coming. With reports that the Kevin Costner-led Yellowstone is ending, the main show may not feature a welcoming family reunion. In an interview with TVLine, Bentley explained that Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan told him that there is no peace coming for the Duttons. Check out his quote below:
“Kelly [Reilly] and I have always had this sort of secret hope that there would be some reconciliation, some love reconnection [between Beth and Jamie], or at least [some circumstance in which] they worked together in some way. [Sheridan]’s just like ‘No, no, no. Hate, hate, hate.’ So I think that is kind of an indication of how this all wraps up maybe.”
What Will Happen To The Yellowstone Universe When The Show Ends?
Costner’s tenure ending with Yellowstone is a disappointment, but the universe as a whole won’t fall apart anytime soon. Costner may leave the project, but there are still many shows to come. Each of them together is working to fill out the Dutton family’s history through numerous generations as they combine to complete the Yellowstone timeline.
With 1883 showing off the founding of the Dutton ranch, the beginning of the family line has been well-established. Other spin-offs, including 1923 and 6666, are filling out the rest of the world. 6666 — pronounced “Four Sixes” — is establishing another modern-day ranch in Texas. No longer limited to Montana, the universe can continue to grow without the Duttons even being involved.
Still, the loss of Costner in Yellowstone is a major moment for the franchise. As the leading series, Yellowstone has become a cultural phenomenon due to the intense infighting within the modern Dutton family. While Yellowstone’s next shows will be different, they will each retain the neo-Western tropes and the familial drama that have made the show so beloved.
