What Do We Really Think Of Blue Bloods Getting Canceled?

After 14 seasons, Blue Bloods is coming to an end and while you might think that is plenty of time to tell a story, we can never get enough of well written TV. If you have watched even a single episode of this series, then you know that this is well-crafted storytelling, done in an emotional way that brings viewers back for more.

Sadly, when it was announced that CBS was ending Blue Bloods, a lot of people felt like there was no solid reasoning behind the decision. And I happen to agree. I do believe that this is a series that could have continued on, much like Law & Order keeps going like an Energizer Bunny. However, this is not the worst news ever.

Blue Bloods is set to end after S14

While I would not have been upset with more seasons of the Reagan family and Tom Selleck as the patriarch of that family, I can also see potential in allowing the show to come to an end gracefully. By leaving its fans wanting more and even having stars of the show not exactly happy with it ending, that could potentially open us up to a sequel or a spin-off.

Donnie Wahlberg has shared plenty of behind the scenes glimpses and thanked the fans for all of their support. And at one point on social media, he even shared a message where he specifically said that “the end is when it’s over.” That seems pretty fitting for Blue Bloods fans, many who have taken to social media to ask for more of the series.

Maybe it is just me, but it is Instagram posts like the one below that give me hope that maybe we could see more of the Reagan family in the future. Could there be a series dedicated to the younger generation? Could the series get a TV movie to wrap up their story? Or could fan demand make a difference and convince CBS that we aren’t done with Blue Bloods?

The actors want to keep the show going

There is a lot on the table when it comes to the future of Blue Bloods, even in light of the decision to cancel the series after Season 14. And let’s not forget that there is an entire X (formerly Twitter) account dedicated to saving Blue Bloods, with a petition and everything. As of March 31, they had garnered 14,000 signatures on the petition alone. And they seemed to have the support of some of the show’s stars as well, which is definitely nice to hear (and see).

Personally, I would love a spin-off of Blue Bloods that allows the series to get a fresh look and new blood added to the mix, while also giving us a lot of what we already know and love from the original. It would be nice to keep the magic of relationships and family, while also adding something new to the world they have built.

Then again, I would not mind if they decided to do what they did with Law & Order and put Blue Bloods on hiatus for a while and then brought it back with new storylines and some new additions to the cast.

There are spinoff possibilities

If they did give Blue Bloods the Law & Order treatment, it might be a way to potentially add to the Reagan family, while also giving us new roles for people like Selleck and Wahlberg. Could we see a retired Frank Reagan? What does that look like for him? Or what about Danny and his career? What’s next for him? Does he want to take on the same job as his father?

There are so many potential questions that a soft reboot would need to answer. And yet, at this point all we are doing is saying goodbye. We might be sad to see the series go, but at least they are getting a chance to say goodbye on their own terms. And hopefully, this ending is only for now and the series gets new life either in a spin-off, a soft reboot, or something else.

What do you think of this cancellation news? Are you as disappointed as we are? Do you think a spin-off is worth considering?
