Yellowstone is one of the most popular television shows, with the second half of its fifth season expected to premiere later this year. In the series, Kelly Reilly and Wes Bentley play the roles of quarreling siblings Beth and Jamie Dutton, who are frequently at odds with one another. However, the constant fighting between the siblings is becoming a major issue for the series.

During an interview, Reilly and Bentley spoke about the dynamics between their characters. However, in the process, the actors inadvertently highlighted why the frequent fighting between Beth and Jamie is turning stale and how creator Taylor Sheridan can still surprise fans with one twist. Here is why Sheridan needs to make one change that could redeem Beth and Jamie’s storyline and save Yellowstone.

Beth and Jamie’s Incessant Fighting In Yellowstone is Becoming a Major Problem

Yellowstone primarily revolves around the Dutton family, led by Kevin Costner‘s John Dutton, as they try to protect their ancestral land from outside forces. However, the rift between siblings Beth and Jamie Dutton played by Kelly Reilly and Wes Bentley is a major subplot in the series.

During an interview with the LA Times, Bentley spoke about the relationship between the siblings, which turns more hostile and confrontational as the seasons pass. Bentley made the following statement explaining the dynamic between the two characters.

Kelly and I agree that there has to be some desperate desire for connection. We’ve also seen it as something that they were striving to repair.

From Bentley’s comments, it is evident that the actors feel there is still some love between Jamie and Beth, which is the driving factor behind their frequent fights. In season 3, it was revealed that Jamie was responsible for Beth’s infertility, which resulted in lifelong hatred for her brother.

However, each subsequent season has only escalated the conflict between the two, with the nuance of their relationship’s core getting somewhat lost in the writing. Moreover, with Costner no longer set to appear in the series and Jamie being set up as the main foil for the Duttons, his conflict with Beth has reached a point of no return, making the storyline stagnant.

Kelly Reilly Revealed How Taylor Sheridan Could Still Fix Beth and Jamie in Yellowstone Season 5

Despite the consistent fights between Beth and Jamie, their conflict hasn’t really progressed in any meaningful manner. As a result, fans admitted feeling exhausted with the subplot. Furthermore, season 5 will likely resolve the conflict once and for all, but how showrunner Taylor Sheridan handles it remains to be seen.

With Jamie branded as a villain and Beth the most fan-favorite Dutton after Costner’s character, it seems the series is headed for a faceoff between the siblings, likely resulting in Beth exacting revenge on Jamie. However, in the same interview as above, Kelly Reilly suggested how the conflict could be resolved unexpectedly.

I’m longing for her to find forgiveness for herself and Jamie. But that is one relationship where there is deep hurt, and it does come out of love.

From Reilly’s words, it is evident that there is still a way for Jamie and Beth to overcome their differences and rekindle their familial bond.

However, with Sheridan’s writing pushing Jamie away from the Dutton family, especially with the revelations in season 4 and season 5, peace is likely no longer an option. Therefore, Beth finally finding a way to forgive Jamie would be an unexpected twist that could save the series from mundanity and truly highlight the complexity of the characters.
