As Yellowstone is ready to roll out its Kevin Costner-less episodes in a few days, the former Dutton family patriarch is reportedly moving into ‘uncharted waters’. Costner may be done with Western drama for the time being after his passion project Horizon failed to impress the audience. The Dances with Wolves is allegedly trying to get close to the surfing world for his new project, Headhunters.
After recent reports of Costner’s new film, an insider source revealed that his new move is not at all welcome in the surfing community. There are also reports that Costner has hired a surf trainer and is currently in Hawaii “channeling his inner Baywatch”.
Kevin Costner’s New Movie Reportedly Irks The Surfing Community
Earlier in October, THR reported that Kevin Costner was turning his attention away from the Horizon Saga to a new project. It was reported that he is set to act, produce, and co-write the film, Headhunters. Cinematographer Steven Holleran, who’s credited with the idea for the film, will make his directorial debut.
THR also shared a rough plot of the film where Costner plays Lazer, an American ex-pat who recruits a group of surfers for a journey to an uncharted island. The film is said to include the “kinetic energy of surf culture with the suspense of horror.” A source later told Closer Weekly that Costner was “trying to be as method as he can be.”
The source shared that Costner had hired a surf trainer and that he was desperate to hang out with the surf crowd. However, a new insider report in Life & Style Mag shared that the surfing community allegedly doesn’t want Costner around. The source shared not-so-kind words about Costner coming from the community.
The source shared that the surfers think that Costner is “lame” and that he is “locked in ‘I’m cool in my new life’ mode.” The source told Life & Style about the actor:
Kevin’s buying up surfboards that are all wrong, and people think he’s a joke. Bottom line is this is a very tight, cliquey, snobby community, and he’s not doing himself favors with his arrogance and by expecting people to fall to their feet.

Headhunters is currently in pre-production in Hawaii. The filming will begin in November and Station Eleven star Daniel Zovatto will be one of the actors joining Costner. It is reported that studios and streamers are already making their moves for the distribution rights of the film.
Kevin Costner Reportedly Annoyed After Horizon‘s Nightmare Reception
Kevin Costner butted heads with creator Taylor Sheridan and exited Yellowstone last year, despite being at the top of his game. He then moved on to his passion project Horizon, even investing $38 million of his hard-earned money into the project (via GQ). The first chapter released in June was a critical and commercial failure.
The second chapter had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 7 and a theatrical release date has yet to be announced. A source earlier told Life & Style Mag that Costner was infuriated after the critical reception of the film at Cannes.
The source shared that Costner was warned about the film’s reception in the press. However, it was still a major blow to the actor. The source told Life & Style:
What’s more irritating to Kevin is that he really doesn’t feel like he has the film industry behind him on this big swing, and he encounters naysayers at every turn. It’s supremely annoying to him after all he’s done for Hollywood and especially for the Western genre.
Despite the failure of the first film, Costner intends to complete the production of the third film. Costner’s new production company, Territory Film Studios, is investing in these next two parts. Movie enthusiasts have already deemed it a bad financial decision from the Oscar-winning actor.
