Actor Donnie Wahlberg is known for playing Detective Danny Reagan in the procedural drama Blue Bloods. The series starring Tom Selleck in the lead role will wrap its run on television with the season 14 finale also serving as the series finale. Despite appearing in the show for fourteen seasons, Wahlberg admitted in an interview to fearing getting fired from it.
After he was initially cast to play Selleck’s son in the series, Wahlberg quickly became skeptical after meeting the veteran actor. As a result, Wahlberg thought the makers would soon realize one discrepancy that made him unfit for the role and fire him. However, Wahlberg’s concerns appeared exaggerated, and here is what he had to say about his fear of getting fired.
Donnie Wahlberg Thought He Would Be Fired From Blue Bloods
Donnie Wahlberg gained recognition for his roles in films such as The Sixth Sense and the Saw franchise. Since 2010, Wahlberg has starred as Daniel Fitzgerald “Danny” Reagan in the series Blue Bloods. The series also stars Tom Selleck as Wahlberg’s on-screen father, Frank Reagan.
During an appearance on the Brotherly Love podcast, Wahlberg spoke about his experience of working with Selleck. The actor admitted that when he first met Selleck he thought he would be fired from the series because of their drastically different appearance.
I’m like, ‘Oh my god, he’s got so much hair. His eyebrows are so bushy.’ I didn’t even care about the mustache. I was like, ‘How am I this dude’s son?… They’re gonna fire me tomorrow.’
Wahlberg made the above statement, recalling his first meeting with Selleck for the series where they were supposed to play father and son.
However, given the difference in their heights and hairlines, Wahlberg felt that he and Selleck were far from being convincing as a father-son duo. Nonetheless, when actor Len Cariou was cast as Wahlberg’s onscreen grandfather, the latter’s concerns subsided because of their similar appearance.
Donnie Wahlberg Talked About Filming the Ending of Blue Bloods
Despite his fears, Wahlberg wasn’t fired from the series and became a key part of its success. After fourteen seasons, Blue Bloods is finally set to wrap up with its series finale slated to air on December 13, 2024.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wahlberg spoke about filming his final scenes for the series.
We all just kind of sat there for a long time, and I think everyone was hesitating to say something to say goodbye because A, nobody wanted to, and B, everyone knew once somebody starts talking, it’s a wrap.
Wahlberg made the above statement about filming the show’s final dinner table scene with most of the main cast present.
The actor admitted that after filming was done the cast found it hard to hold back their emotions and everyone started crying. Wahlberg also revealed that Selleck read a poem he had memorized to commemorate the conclusion of their time on the series, which served as a beautiful bookmark for the last day of shooting.
