Netflix fans are obsessed with the new series Territory, calling it the Australian version of Yellowstone.
The show focuses on a family’s battle for control of a large cattle station in the Australian Outback.
Since its debut in the third spot of Netflix’s top 10 most-watched shows last week, it has received an overwhelmingly positive reception on review sites and from fans on social media.
The show holds a 71 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on seven reviews of the show.
Several viewers drew parallels between Territory and the hit Western, Yellowstone, while others compared to hit HBO series Succession.
Territory centers on the Lawson family and the battle for control of Marianne Station, as well as the sudden death of the cattle ranch empire’s heir, Daniel Lawson.
Yellowstone focuses on the Dutton family and their battle to keep control of a large Montana ranch.
The difference of locales is not enough to make some believe Territory is not a knockoff of Yellowstone.
‘Territory is just Yellowstone with accents,’ one user wrote on X:
Others insisted that Territory’s ‘Yellowstone-esque’ vibe makes it ‘worth the watch.’
‘Netflix just dropped a new series called Territory that’s basically Yellowstone (hate to admit, it’s an admittedly great show)…’ another person wrote on X.
Viewers on Reddit weren’t as impressed, with one person saying Territory ‘felt like the Walmart version of Yellowst one.’
‘Territory is like Yellowstone for The Hallmark Channel,’ another Reddit user claimed.
The stars of Territory addressed the comparison as well.
‘I haven’t seen too much of Yellowstone. Obviously, it’s had such a profound impact on culture over there and here,’ actor Sam Corlett told Yahoo Lifestyle.
‘I suppose it’s an honour to be compared, but what I know is that this is so unapologetically Australian that I don’t see it being anything like anything that has ever been on screen.’
Other Territory cast member admitted to loving Yellowstone.
‘In the sense of Montana and the Northern Territory could not be further apart,’ star Sam Delich told Yahoo Lifestyle.
‘I think there are similar themes, of course, but overall I think fans of Yellowstone will love Territory, but I just think it’s its own entity.’
Social media users were not the only ones to note the similarities between Territory and Yellowstone.
One review from The Hollywood Reporter noted the ‘soapy show’ does a better job at its ‘attempts at weaving the Native perspective into the storytelling.’
‘I guess you could enjoy for all of the reasons it feels like countless other pieces of entertainment you’ve enjoyed,’ the reviewer wrote.
A reviewer from Screenhub described the show as a ‘high-stakes saga of a family in turmoil, with all the expected plotting, scheming, back-biting and occasional passionate embracing.’
‘It’s a freewheeling place where anything can happen, especially with these conniving characters,’ the critic wrote.
‘The sense that there’s a surprise around every corner helps Territory come across as more than just another scheming family saga.’
