Kevin Costner has hinted he could return to Yellowstone as John Dutton despite departing the series halfway through season five.
His next big screen project Horizon is due to be released to the big screen in two chapters this summer and the Hollywood star sacrificed an immense amount of his own time and money to get it made.
Unfortunately, it meant his schedule was simply too packed to return for the final episodes of the hit Paramount Network series.
Kevin’s absence could cause some gaping holes in Yellowstone’s final outing following John’s recovery from getting shot and subsequent stint as the governor of Montana in the first half of season five.
However, the actor has confirmed he’s still willing to come back and finish John’s story despite reports of a feud between him and the show’s creator Taylor Sheridan.
“I think it’s possible,” he shared when asked his thoughts about coming back to Yellowstone.
“Who’s to know what a final season is anymore these days?”
In addition to existing spin-offs 1883 and 1923, there are also several proposed Yellowstone offshoots currently in the works.
Another prequel is set to bring the story of the Duttons’ ancestors into 1944, while the present-day ranch won’t be forgotten about in 2024.
Following news of Yellowstone’s flagship series coming to an end, Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey was reportedly being eyed to take over.
Despite the franchise seemingly moving on without him, Kevin is still confident he’ll be able to return in some capacity once his schedule clears up.
“I did five seasons of it,” he continued in a chat with Empire. “I would love to come back and do it, but it really depends.
“There are so many other universes [other Yellowstone shows] that are coming out, that maybe they’ll circle back to that, maybe they won’t.
“I don’t know what they’ll do, but I’m absolutely open to it.”
For now, though, Kevin is focusing on the release of his big-screen Western blockbuster Horizon, which is unfortunately tracking for a rather lacklustre opening weekend at the box office.
He apparently hopes to follow up the two-part epic with another pair of sequels, but he may have to return to the Yellowstone well if Horizon fails to find its audience.
