Yellowstone is ending. But that’s not to say that the story couldn’t continue.
Previously, reports came out that stars Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly, who play Rip and Beth on the hit series, are “in talks” to potentially continue their characters’ stories past the series finale, which will air in December. Although nothing has been confirmed, Reilly tells Entertainment Weekly that those talks are happening. “There’s potentially another chapter,” Reilly says. “It’s being talked about now.”
“Nothing is set in stone,” Reilly continues. “But if Taylor wants to write it, I would want to do it. That’s it. Because he’s the one that’s written every single line I’ve ever said. She came from his imagination. But we’re both in agreement that there’s a shift that has to take place. Because you can’t keep telling the same story. This story is ending. Yellowstone as we know it is ending, but if there is more story to tell with some of the characters, it’s going to be a little different.”
These aren’t the first talks about continuing the show after its initial iteration. After it was revealed that Yellowstone would end with season 5, Paramount announced a new show, titled 2024, to pick up after the events of the flagship series. Although the casting was never confirmed, many speculated that 2024 could be led by Matthew McConaughey, whom Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan had spoken about in an interview, and possibly include some of the characters from the Dutton ranch.
“He seems like a natural fit,” Sheridan said of McConaughey when talking to The Hollywood Reporter in June of 2023. “We had a few conversations over the years, and spitballed a few ideas. Then he started watching Yellowstone and responded to it. He was like, ‘I want to do that.’ And by ‘that’ he meant diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. And then I said, ‘Buddy, that we can do.'”
However, 2024 has since undergone a title change. It’s now called The Madison, and though it is the first present-day spinoff of Yellowstone, it hasn’t added any of the original cast thus far, instead casting Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams, and Matthew Fox in main roles. According to a press release, the series “is a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.”
As for the original series, it remains to be seen whether there’s more to the story of the Duttons we know and love, but for now, we do know thatYellowstone is gearing up to air its last episodes (without star Kevin Costner).
The final season premieres Sunday, Nov. 10, on Paramount Network.
