How Far Spencer & Alex Are From Yellowstone At The End Of 1923 Season 2 Episode 5

Spencer and Alex Dutton still have some travel time left before reaching the Yellowstone Ranch in 1923, raising questions about when they’ll finally make it to their destination. 1923’s season 1 ending saw Spencer and Alex separated on their ship after Spencer killed Alex’s ex-fiancé in a duel. Since the dramatic scene where Alex declared she would meet her husband in Montana, the pair have been on individual journeys, facing perilous obstacles and barely managing to press on with their lives and freedom. However, with only three episodes left in the season, these obstacles are becoming strenuous.

1923’s season 2 story is focused around the war for the Dutton Ranch, with Timothy Dalton’s Donald Whitfield planning for an onslaught with Banner Creighton leading his forces. Season 1 was packed with action, but the conflict has been delayed due to an oppressive Montana winter, providing time for Spencer to travel back from overseas so he can lead his family to victory. Showrunner Taylor Sheridan is saving his climactic war for the show’s final episodes, with 1923 seemingly being planned to end after season 2.

Spencer Dutton Is Still In West Texas At The End Of 1923 Season 2, Episode 5
Spencer Finally Got A Direct Ticket Back To Montana

1923’s season 2, episode 5 ending saw Spencer finally have some luck, with Marshall Fossett setting him free and even helping him with a train ticket back to Montana. From West Texas to Bozeman, Montana, it shouldn’t be very long now if Spencer can remain on a straight-shot train ride, likely about a two-day trip. 1923 is fairly inconsistent with how much time passes between or during each episode, but with such a short span, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him arrive at home at some point in the next episode.

it wouldn’t be shocking to see him arrive at home at some point in the next episode.

That calculation is mostly based on the possibility of Spencer not running into any more trouble, though. He’s alerted Sheriff William McDowell of his arrival, meaning that characters in Montana will be anticipating his return. If the sheriff believes Spencer’s arrival will kick off a series of violent events, he may attempt to intercept the train, providing yet another obstacle, though this time closer to the ranch. That would leave two episodes or so for Spencer to finally be reunited with the Dutton family.

Alexandra Dutton Is In Chicago At The End Of 1923 Season 2, Episode 5
Alex Has Made Some New Friends & Will Travel By Car

Alex Dutton has had it even worse than Spencer, with her last three episodes all seeing her assaulted in some manner. Her trip through immigration at Ellis Island was horrifying, she was robbed in Grand Central Station, and then she narrowly avoided being arrested after the altercation on the train ride to Chicago. Luckily, she seems to have made friends with a kindly British couple who intend to drive her in the right direction. They appear trustworthy, but so far, nearly every character either Spencer or Alex has encountered has been trouble in some way.

Geographically, Alex should only be a couple of days away if she were to travel by train, but the trip to Fargo was canceled. By car, it could be a longer ride, not to mention potential issues due to weather. I wouldn’t predict Alex would reach Bozeman in episode 6, as her path isn’t as much of a straight shot as Spencer’s. Episode 7 seems like the most likely time for her to arrive, taking her from a horrifying odyssey to a war-torn destination, as she’ll be finally meeting her new family while they’re in the midst of a fight for their lives.

Spencer & Alex Don’t Know About Each Other’s 1923 Season 2 Journeys
Neither Character Knows The Other Is Alive

Part of the drama about Spencer and Alex’s journey is that they’re risking their lives and everything else to make it to Montana when neither of them even knows the other is alive. Especially in Alex’s case, she’s given up her entire life when, for all she knows, Spencer could have died before even making it back to America. It speaks to the power of their romance that they’re still pressing on. For Spencer, he knows he has to defend his family, but season 1 showed that all he truly wants is Alex.

The fact that these two characters have been traveling and suffering through these respective experiences is amplified when considering how little they know. They’ll have plenty of catching up to do if they finally reunite before the season ends, and it will be fascinating to see how their journeys have changed them. Hopefully, by the time 1923 ends, it will all have been worth it.
