Grey’s Anatomy star Kevin McKidd has teased what’s next for his character Owen Hunt after his wife Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) suffered a life-threatening medical emergency.
The season 20 premiere for the long running medical drama picked up with Teddy’s medical crisis, which saw the surgeon left fighting for her life after contracting bacterial endocarditis in her heart.
Teddy ultimately survived her medical crisis after undergoing a major operation to replace her emergent valve, however her determination to move past her health care will cause problems between her and Owen.
Speaking to People about what lies next for the couple, McKidd teased complications for the couple as they are “disconnected” on how to move forward.
“They keep missing each other,” the actor said, adding that Owen’s PTSD will be triggered by Teddy’s health scare.
McKidd revealed that Owen will be left struggling as Teddy becomes “single-minded and driven” to move past her health scare and get back to working again.
“They’re kind of disconnected a little bit because Owen’s still kind of going through the shock of the trauma of what happened of seeing his wife laying on the floor potentially dead, and they haven’t really talked about it,” he continued.
“I think it can happen in couples quite a lot — if something quite traumatic has happened.”
Fortunately for Owen and Teddy, the couple will be able to eventually find a way to communicate towards the end of the season and process the event together.
“It’s kind of a cool lesson in traumatic events and how people can kind of shut down a little bit,” he said.
“They’re both a little bit in their own worlds.”
Grey’s Anatomy season 20 and Station 19’s final season will premiere on March 14, 2024 on ABC in the US. Both shows stream on Disney+ in the UK.
