The cast and crew of Grey’s Anatomy shed light on the season 20 finale. The milestone twentieth outing of the hit medical drama was markedly different than any of the show’s past seasons. Due to the impact of the writers and actors strikes, Grey’s Anatomy season 20 consists of only 10 episodes. But even considering the shorter run, the ABC staple still managed to pack in plenty of twists and turns. It even featured the return of Jessica Capshaw as Dr. Arizona Robbins.
While speaking at the SeriesFest event in Denver over the weekend, per Deadline, the cast and crew previewed the upcoming Grey’s Anatomy season 20 finale. Showrunner Meg Marinis teased how the shorter episode count will impact how the story wraps up, mentioning what’s ahead for the interns and Meredith. Camilla Luddingon, who plays Dr Josephine “Jo” Wilson, added that the finale is filled with cliffhangers. Their quotes are below:
Marinis : “Heading towards the end of the season, because it’s a shorter season of 10 episodes because of the strikes, we really pay off what we started in episode one at the end of the season. Interns being in trouble, Meredith doing this secret research, things come to a head.”
Luddingon :, who plays Dr Josephine “Jo” Wilson, added that things “[Things really pay off. [It’s an] edge of your seat [episode with] cliffhangers.”

What’s Going On With Meredith & The Interns?
Meredith Could Lose Her Research Funding
Beginning with Meredith – who now has a more recurring presence on the show due to Ellen Pompeo’s other commitments – she’s been warned by Dr. Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) not to focus on unconventional Alzheimer’s research. If she loses her research funding, she may also be at risk of doing damage to her co-conspirators Dr. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) and Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver).
The interns, as indicated by Marinis’ comments, are also in a difficult spot. This stems from the events in the Grey’s Anatomy season 19 finale, in which the interns conduct an unauthorized procedure on a patient. It has had significant ramifications, as the group has been banned from the operating room. Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) hopes this will make the group better and stronger in the long run, but it’s been bumpy in practice. Bailey has even recently vented about feeling disrespected by the interns.
The season 20 finale, which airs on May 20, comes as ABC has already confirmed Grey’s Anatomy season 21. There are no indications that the beloved medical soap is ending anytime soon, which means that the cliffhangers looming ahead will have more space to develop further and even potentially resolve.
