Donnie Wahlberg Was Asked If Maria Baez Will Appear In New Show ‘Boston Blue’: Here’S How He Responded

One of the biggest questions about the upcoming Blue Bloods offshoot, Boston Blue, is if Marisa Ramirez’s Detective Maria Baez will appear on the show.

After sharing a short teaser for Boston Blue on Instagram on Tuesday, March 25, Donnie Wahlberg fielded a question about whether or not Baez would be part of the new show alongside his character, Danny Reagan, as he works for the Boston PD.

“Hope we see Baez on this new journey,” the fan wrote in a comment underneath Donnie’s post.

The New Kids on the Block hitmaker replied to the comment with a winky face emoji, seemingly hinting that there are some big surprises in store for those who will be tuning into Boston Blue.

Another person responded, “@donniewahlberg that said … that romance can kick in NOW PLEASE!!!”

Viewers only got to see a glimmer of Danny and Baez’s relationship unfolding in the season 14 Blue Bloods series finale when he asked her to grab a pizza with him. Unfortunately, that’s about as far as the romance went on screen as viewers didn’t get to see more.

Much to everyone’s dismay, Baez was not invited to the final Reagan family dinner, despite fans hoping to see her sitting next to Danny. Instead, the final family dinner was kept to just family.

When showrunner Kevin Wade was asked about why Baez was missing from family dinner, he explained that their relationship may have continued off screen.

“Honestly, it didn’t really come to the forefront,” he told Deadline in the December 2024 interview. “Because at the end of their last scene together, there was a hint of a whiff of a promise that they were going to leave that squad and go off to dinner and end up at one or the other’s house, yes. But it felt like a big leap, with only two minutes left, after 14 years, to introduce them like that at the dinner.”

He further explained that he did not want to abruptly make Baez and Danny in a relationship without giving them the love story they deserved.

“We’ve done it in Season 8 with Jamie and Eddie, and it felt like we had plenty of tarmac to get there,” he said. “This would have been a little too quick, I think. To me, it was just too fast. But that’s one of those things that I said before. Here’s what you can imagine in the future. If you love the show, feel free to draw it for yourself. We just left little, little crumbs there.”

The final family dinner concluded with Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan saying a prayer and sharing how grateful he was for his family. Kevin was once again asked why he chose to end the show that way.

“Well, it was either end on a joke or a prayer. I went with the prayer,” he concluded.

With Boston Blue set to debut on CBS this fall, many are hoping that Danny will be reunited with the Reagan crew and some of his former coworkers, including Baez, during the episodes.

“So excited to carry on the tradition, to share so many surprises, to answer some unanswered questions and to welcome all of you — to #BostonBlue! The next chapter in the #BlueBloods legacy begins. I can’t wait. See you CBS fall!” Donnie wrote on Instagram along with the teaser trailer.
