Danny Reagan is ready to get back in action.
Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg teased his upcoming spinoff show, Boston Blue, in an Instagram post Tuesday, while also confirming that the cop drama will debut on CBS in the fall.
“So excited to carry on the tradition, to share so many surprises, to answer some unanswered questions and to welcome all of you — to #BostonBlue!” he wrote. “The next chapter in the #BlueBloods legacy begins. I can’t wait. See you CBS fall!”
Boston Blue will see Danny, a former NYPD detective, take on a new post in Wahlberg’s real-life hometown in Massachusetts. There’s been no official word yet on whether other Blue Bloods cast members will join Wahlberg in a regular or guest capacity. However, at the end of the Blue Bloods series finale, Danny asked his longtime partner Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) out on a date following advice from his grandfather to settle down, so it’d be surprising if there wasn’t at least an acknowledgement of Baez when the spinoff launches.
If Baez does appear on Boston Blue, it doesn’t sound like she’ll be working alongside Danny as she did on Blue Bloods, as the official description for the spinoff indicates that Wahlberg will have a new onscreen partner: Lena Peters, a detective who comes from a Boston law enforcement dynasty (sound familiar?). Lena’s casting has yet to be announced.
Prior to the announcement of Boston Blue, Wahlberg hinted at a Danny Reagan spinoff while pitching an alternate ending for his Blue Bloods character during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“I would have Danny Reagan walk right into his next chapter of his life, maybe in a different place doing a similar job and perhaps with someone from the current cast,” he said. “But I want him to not be too far from the family so that he could still see them and spend time with them, but maybe to see what life has in store for him now that his boys have gone off and he’s empty-nesting and his wife’s gone. Maybe he can see what the future holds for him on his own. As long as he can visit the family sometimes.”
He added, “Does that sound like a tease for a spinoff?”
