Donnie Wahlberg Shares Huge Updates About ‘Blue Bloods’ Offshoot ‘Boston Blue’: ‘Fun Surprises’

Donnie Wahlberg is prepared to carry on the Blue Bloods legacy with the starring role in the upcoming offshoot series, Boston Blue.

The actor appeared virtually for an interview on PIX11 News, sharing new information about gearing up to film the new show in Boston, a big change from filming Blue Bloods in New York City for 14 seasons. Donnie, 55, assured the hosts that Danny Reagan will continue to root for his favorite New York sports teams despite being in a new city.

“The good news is Danny Reagan will still be a Mets fan,” he said with a smile, as the hosts laughed. “Let’s get that out of the way right now because I know they have the best record in baseball right now, the Mets. Danny’s going to be happy.”

“We tried so hard to keep Blue Bloods on the air,” Donnie added of the new show. “All of us – the cast, the crew, everybody – and honestly, when I say the crew, like, working in New York with our crew was one of the great thrills of my life, and you know, we just couldn’t keep the show going, but when CBS approached me to keep the character going, I said, ‘Well, that sounds interesting.’”

“If anyone knows Danny Reagan, and if anyone knows me, I like surprises and The Reagan’s will always just be a phone call away,” he continued. “Danny Reagan likes to use his phone, so I imagine we will pay homage to Blue Bloods as much as we can and honor what Blue Bloods started and carry it forward, and I think have a lot of fun surprises for everybody.”

Donnie echoed something similar when he sat down for a recent interview with Morning MAGIC with Sue and Kendra.

“Well CBS said, ‘Do you want to do a follow-up to Blue Bloods, like another show in the Blue Bloods universe?’ and I was like, ‘Hm maybe,’ and they were like, ‘Do you want to do it in Boston?’ and I was like, ‘Oh my god,’” the New Kids on the Block singer said.

“I can’t tell a lot of stuff about it other than at this point, I’m very humbled to be producing the show with Jerry Bruckheimer and some incredible writers and producers known as the Brandons, and it’s really an honor to keep the Blue Bloods tradition alive, and I think that’s what I’ll be doing with the show,” he revealed. “It will be a Danny Reagan-based show, but the Reagans are only a phone call away and Danny Reagan loves to use the phone, that’s all I’ll say.”

An official premiere date has not yet been announced for Boston Blue, however, a teaser trailer revealed that the program will be hitting the CBS lineup in the fall. Much like Donnie’s hints that Blue Bloods cast members will appear in Boston Blue, an insider told Closer that Tom Selleck was not ruling out making a cameo as Frank Reagan.

“Given the chance, he’d jump at doing something in [the Blue Bloods] universe again but he’s not going to sit home twiddling his thumbs,” the source said in March.
