Danny Reagan and Maria Baez’s partnership on Blue Bloods had fans speculating for several seasons that the two would eventually end up together. What happened between them in the show’s series finale?
Maria Baez Was Introduced in Season 3 of ‘Blue Bloods’
Baez was introduced to Blue Bloods viewers in season 3 as a guest star before she became Danny’s partner in season 4. He had known her for a long time before that. She and Danny, whose bond grew stronger each season, later received the Medal of Valor after putting their lives on the line in a drug raid.
In the season 12 Blue Bloods finale, Baez adopted a baby girl after the child’s mother, Elena Marquez, was killed by a bomb blast.
“I heard that nobody from Elena’s family came forward to adopt that beautiful little baby,” Danny told Baez while she was holding the baby at the hospital. “I also heard that one of the heroic detectives who caught the guy who killed her mommy did come forward to adopt that beautiful baby.”
“Yeah,” Baez told Danny, to which he responded, “Well, she’s very lucky because you’re going to make one hell of a mom.”
“I hope so,” Baez said. “I never thought that I wanted kids, but after seeing her, I just couldn’t stop thinking about her.”
“If you need anything, ever, I’m here for you,” Danny told her.
Throughout the seasons, the pair had many more touching and chemistry-filled moments, including saving each other’s lives. But, as the show neared season 14, things stayed strictly platonic between them. As the 14th and final began airing in February 2024, many took to social media to express their desire for Danny and Baez to give romance a go.
Did Danny Reagan and Maria Baez End Up Together on ‘Blue Bloods’?
In the Blue Bloods season 14 series finale, Danny asked Baez out, and she agreed to go with him.
“I was actually just thinking about something that my grandfather said to me. Do you want to get a pizza?” he said, referencing a conversation he had with Henry Reagan earlier in the episode about not bringing work home with him.
Unfortunately, that’s the most fans got to see of their suspected relationship. Baez was not among the attendees at the final Reagan family dinner, leaving the audience to make their own assumptions about their romance.
Donnie Wahlberg spoke out about the ending for the characters and how much he fought for the outcome.
“It was important to [producer] Kevin Wade to not have every partnership turn into a relationship. And I respected that, and I agreed with it. I think it was just probably important for me personally that Danny grows,” he told Variety in December 2024. “As the audience started sort of clamoring for a relationship with Danny and Baez, I thought, it’s more important for them to grow and for her to start making an impact on him, and him to really respect her in a way that he hasn’t always respected certain people in the show.”
“I think that was a lot of me really pushing. I pushed a lot for some closure with that. I went to [writer] Siobhan O’Connor, and I was like, ‘Listen, you’ve got to do something. They don’t need to go get married, but something would be nice, just to show that there may be a future for them, or that their relationship has really evolved,’” he added.
There’s Still a Chance for Danny and Baez on ‘Boston Blue’
Donnie is set to reprise his role of Danny in the Blue Bloods offshoot, Boston Blue. So far, he’s already dropped some hints that several of his Blue Bloods costars will come aboard for the series expansion, giving us hope that we’ll find out more about what happened between Danny and Baez off screen.
