1923 star Brandon Sklenar, who portrays Spencer Dutton in the Yellowstone prequel series, has teased what to expect from the Dutton family’s story in season 2, hinting at some dark developments ahead. 1923 season 1 ended with tragic circumstances for the family, as Spencer is left stranded at a port, separated from Alex who is on her way to Montana. In the meantime, Jack Dutton’s fiancée Liz Strafford has a miscarriage, setting the stage for her story in season 2. At the same time, Jacob and Cara continue to try and protect the Ranch from its many threats.
Speaking with Forbes about the forthcoming season 2, Sklenar hinted at what to expect in 1923’s next batch of episodes. The Spencer actor didn’t give too much away in terms of specific plot details but did reveal it would get dark. He also praised the series finale, satisfied with where creator Taylor Sheridan is taking his character’s arc. Check out what Sklenar had to say below:
The tone shifts a lot and it’s definitely a bit darker. It’s very beautiful. It’s so hard for me to not give away spoilers. I do get plenty of Helen [Mirren] and Harrison [Ford] time, and it’s going to be special. I mean, the finale of the series is probably one of the best things I’ve read in my life. I’ve kind of known how it was going to end since day one – Taylor [Sheridan] kind of told me. I knew the full arc of Spencer from day one, so in shooting part one, your mindful of where he needs to go. I’m really excited.

With Sklenar remaining silent on how the story of 1923 season 2 is going to evolve moving forward, the series could take its characters in a myriad of different directions. While Spencer is now a long way from home without any real means of getting back to Montana, Jacob and Cara are now dealing with Donald Whitfield, who is demanding money after paying the Ranch’s property tax. In the meantime, Jack will likely have to help his wife through her grief while doing his best to protect the family’s home from outside forces.
One key element of many Sheridan TV shows is the unpredictable nature of their storylines, with many wild events coming out of nowhere that characters are forced to deal with. While plenty has already been established about the challenges the characters in 1923 now face, there are bound to be other surprises that come along as the spinoff’s final season plays out. This could include a new scheme by Banner following his release from prison, or Zane taking action to get revenge on the police officers who beat him in front of Alice.
With the Duttons facing a plethora of issues that threaten both their Ranch and themselves, it seems like 1923 season 2 will bring many major conflicts from season 1 to a head. Because of the many storylines happening all at once, there’s likely to be some crossover between them as the show begins to reach a conclusion. Perhaps the series will even set up a future Yellowstone spinoff like the upcoming 1944, showcasing the generational effects each new series has on the others.
