Bud Spencer’s family moved to Rome in 1940 – that’s when he became a member of the city’s swimming club. He studied law, but also continued his sports activities. He began his career as a successful athlete: he was the first Italian swimmer to achieve under one minute in the 100 m freestyle. In 1949, he won the breaststroke championship, then became the European champion with the Italian team. His sports career ended with an Olympic silver medal as part of the same team. After signing his first Hollywood contract in 1967, he retired from active sports activities and played his last water polo match with the Hungarian national team featured by György Kárpáti and Dezső Gyarmati.

Carlo Pedersoli, aka Bud Spencer, was born on October 31, 1929 in Naples, southern Italy.
