Blue Bloods Star Movingly Recounts Cast’S Last Day On Set: “I’M Getting Choked Up As I Say This”

Blue Bloods star Bridget Moynahan recalls her emotional last day of filming on season 14. Premiering on CBS in 2010, the hit police procedural is created by Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess with a story that revolves around the Reagan family of police officers in New York. Starring Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, Will Estes, Len Cariou, and Andrew Terraciano, Blue Bloods season 14, which premiered earlier this year and will return in October, is now set to bring the show to an end.

In a recent interview with People, Moynahan, who plays Erin Reagan, Frank’s (Selleck) daughter, recalls her final week of filming on Blue Bloods season 14, revealing that “every single day was emotional”. The actor recalls one moment she shared with Selleck, in particular, when her on-screen father came to set to watch her and Wahlberg film their last scene even though he had already wrapped. While there’s evidently a lot of sadness about the show’s ending, Moynahan says their final day of filming “was quite beautiful.” Check out Moynahan’s comments below:

“I think we’re all a little disappointed. We’ve had such a good time. We all want to be there. It’s a real loss. This was our daily lives for 14 years. And we’ve all experienced major life moments together, whether it’s births, deaths, marriages, divorces, illnesses, we’ve had it all together.

“I think one of the most beautiful things on that last day for me, I’ll never forget it, is Tom, because he was already wrapped and he came down for Donnie and mine’s last scene. We were behind a monitor — I’m getting choked up as I say this — and I had my arm around Tom, and he was holding onto my hands the way my dad did. We were just so thankful, and he was so gracious. From day one that’s the way it went: ‘Nice to meet you. We are family.’

“That love and appreciation and respect without ever having to say. And the appreciation for everything that we had just built while we’re watching our brother, son, teammate and such a voice and face of the show finish his last scene, it was really quite emotional.”

“I have such gratitude for supporting us, cheering us on, for tuning in every Friday night, for caring about the stories and characters, and particularly all the men and women in law enforcement who do put their lives on the line for us.

“It was a lot of lasts. And a lot of really wonderful conversations with people, and a lot of them have been there since day one. So it was a lot of hugs and a lot of tears. It was quite beautiful.”

What Moynahan’s Comment Means For The Blue Bloods Finale
This Iteration Of The Show Is Coming To An End

It came as a shock to many viewers when it was announced earlier this year that Blue Bloods season 14 would bring the show to an end. A #SaveBlueBloods fan campaign subsequently emerged, and Selleck himself would voice support for the show and its continuation. In an interview with CBS News in April, Selleck stressed that “All the cast wants to come back” while touting the show’s strong ratings.

CBS executive Amy Reisenbach would subsequently confirm in May, per Deadline, that Blue Bloods is indeed ending, expressing that “It is important to give the show the sendoff it deserves.” Since then, Paramount co-CEO Brian Robbins has revealed that a Blue Bloods “franchise extension” is in development, but it’s not yet clear what form this will take. It’s possible that a new show in that universe will bring back members of the Reagan family, but Moynahan’s latest comment certainly suggests that the main Blue Bloods cast treated their final days of filming as the definitive end of the line.

Will A Spinoff Be As Successful?

While actors who portray friends and family on-screen often don’t share this same dynamic off-screen, Moynahan’s comments further suggest that key figures involved in Blue Bloods truly did love working together. There’s evidently a great deal of respect and admiration shared among the cast and crew, and the ways in which this permeates the on-screen drama is part of why the police procedural had such a long and respected run. It sounds like more Blue Bloods drama is on the way in the form, but any new show might struggle to recapture the magic without the original show’s cast.
