The popular CBS drama features Commissioner Frank Reagan struggling to maintain control of his team.
Frank Reagan (played by Tom Selleck) once again comes into conflict with Mayor Peter Chase (Dylan Walsh) when he finds his police officers under fire from New York’s new political regime.
In this week’s episode, Family Matters, the Commissioner gets a pep talk from Detective Abigail Baker (Abigail Hawk) when a new proposal from Mayor Chase threatens his officers.
The episode synopsis reads: “Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) investigate a grand theft case tied to feuding crime families.
“Frank clashes with Mayor Chase when an influx of immigrants arrives in the city.
“Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan) questions whether her campaign for district attorney will affect her day-to-day work.”
In a new clip from the episode, detectives Sidney Gormley (Robert Clohessy) and Garrett Moore (Gregory Jbara) are stunned and silent as Abigail gives her boss a stern talk.
“I cannot put more officers on the streets and put them in these camps for the Mayor’s political benefit,” Frank emphasized.
“This is more than the Mayor’s ambition,” Abigail replied. “This is New York City, which has always been a beacon of hope and refuge.”
Frank acknowledges Abigail’s point, but she clearly believes the Commissioner needs a reality check if he wants Chase to cooperate with the NYPD.
“You have to speak louder,” she continued. “Garrett is right. This is parsed like nothing else.
“You can’t just go and make hay with your armed police force.”
Sidney and Garrett were speechless at Abigail’s arguments and Frank also seemed stunned by the submission.
However, Mayor Chase has frequently butted heads with the Reagans in the past, and Frank may not be willing to give up this position without a fight.
After being appointed Mayor in season 10, he endorsed Frank’s daughter Erin to be the city’s new District Attorney, but only if the Commissioner replaced Garrett with a tougher DCPI.
As Frank’s officers prepare to face an influx of immigrants, Abigail is determined the NYPD will help maintain New York’s ‘hopeful’ reputation.
Her previous attempts to go against Frank’s methods didn’t go well for her, though.
Although she remains one of his most trusted detectives, Abigail’s job could be threatened if she begins to interfere in her boss’s conflict with the Mayor.
