Blue Bloods fans took to social media to share their reactions to the news that the franchise will be expanding with a new show under the working title Boston Blue.
Boston Blue is an offshoot of the original 14-season series, and will star Donnie Wahlberg as NYPD Detective Danny Reagan.
“In BOSTON BLUE, a universe expansion of the long-running top drama BLUE BLOODS, Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family,” the synopsis of the new show said via a CBS press release.
After CBS announced the news that Boston Blue was straight to order and would be hitting the CBS lineup at some point during the 2025-2026 broadcast season, many wondered if other Blue Bloods costars would appear, how Danny’s story would lead him to Boston and more details about the plot.
“Should have just kept Blue Bloods going…now they have to explain the move to Boston without Baez,” one person wrote on X.
In the Blue Bloods season 14 finale, Danny and Detective Maria Baez hinted that they were going to take their friendship to the next level when he asked her out to get pizza. Baez was not at the final Reagan family dinner, but fans assumed she and Danny were continuing their romance off screen.
“So much for him a Baez getting together and being with family. Still, I’m excited for something Blue Bloods- related,” another viewer wrote.
“Baez is the big question! We need answers,” one person said, to which another person responded, “From what I’ve read…No Baez.”
When it was first revealed that Blue Bloods was ending after 14 seasons, many wondered what led to that decision, including members of the cast.
“My biggest goal is to make sure people realize we went out in rather spectacular success,” Tom Selleck told Entertainment Weekly in December 2024. “It wasn’t tired, it wasn’t anything else. Somebody may be able to tell me someday why CBS wanted to end it, but I haven’t had a good answer yet.”
“Completely misses the point, it was a show founded in the family dynamic, this might become a good show but it won’t satisfy true fans of the original,” another person argued on X about the offshoot.
“So, despite still getting good ratings, CBS cancels Blue Bloods, only to sign off on a Blue Bloods spinoff?” another person asked.
“Glad to hear, but why cancel a perfectly brilliant, successful series that already has a large audience if they’re going to just start up a new one? Why?” another person echoed.
Others voiced how happy they were for Donnie, 55, and this new opportunity to front his own show.
“I am so very excited to hear the news about ‘Boston Blue’ and that Danny Reagan is coming back!! Congratulations @DonnieWahlberg !! I am so happy for you,” one supporter wrote on X.
“Yay!!!!! I’m so happy to see Donnie is back in a TV series. Yippee!!!” another fan wrote.
“I still miss Blue Bloods, but I love @DonnieWahlberg, and I will eagerly await this spinoff. I hope it’s actually filmed in Boston,” a commenter wrote on X.
