Beth’s feelings true feelings about Rip are explained by Yellowstone star Kelly Reilly. Flashbacks have helped to shed some light on the long history that Beth (Reilly) has with Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), as they were in each other’s lives from an early age. The relationship is also deeply integral to the Yellowstone franchise itself, as the pair first shared the screen together in the Western’s debut episode in 2018. But despite an unforgettable marriage proposal and a surprise wedding of sorts in the Yellowstone season 4 finale, things haven’t always been easy for the pair.
In a featurette which is included in the Yellowstone season 5, part 1 DVD and Blu-ray release, Reilly talked about Beth’s feelings for Rip. The actor noted that Beth is haunted by her past, particularly the fact that she has a lot of regrets and secrets that Rip isn’t aware of. Reilly is candid about the fact that Beth worries about losing Rip, pointing to the show’s recent episodes as proof. Reilly’s full quote, via Insider, is included below:
” Beth is haunted by her past. She has a lot of regrets and she has a lot of secrets that he doesn’t know. So there is something that is under the surface that will one day, I’m sure, come, and she’s probably certain that she will lose him. In this season, you see that she is waking up in the night, constantly having bad dreams, constantly thinking about how she treated him, how she was with him, some of the decisions she made.
She cannot switch that part of herself off, there’s a tremendous sadness in that. He doesn’t know any of that, and she’s protecting him. So there’s a weighted burden in her heart that she cannot share with him. He’s trying to reassure her and love her, but he doesn’t know the truth.”
What To Expect From Beth & Rip When Yellowstone Returns
The last time viewers caught up with Taylor Sheridan’s hit Western, a lot of events shifted. The midseason finale of Yellowstone season 5, part 1, sees Beth’s relationship with sibling Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) continue to devolve. At one point, Beth even suggests killing him. It’s an intriguing development, as two charismatic actors in Reilly and Bentley get a lot of room to work with. It also points to massive questions that Yellowstone will have to address whenever it returns.
The first half of Yellowstone season 5, part 1 devotes a lot of time to Rip’s backstory. It’s been suggested that the character could continue on in spinoffs whenever the main Yellowstone series wraps up its remaining episodes. That leads to another question of whether Beth would follow Rip or even appear as a guest character. Or whether, as Reilly seems to indicate, the relationship is due for a reckoning.
For the moment, like most other films and series, the remaining episodes of Yellowstone are delayed by the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes. There is no clear indication, as yet, of when the strikes might resolve. But the hit show has left audiences with plenty to speculate over, especially when it comes to the popular relationship between Rip and Beth.
