All 6 Upcoming Yellowstone Tv Shows & Spinoffs Explained

After five successful seasons on TV, Yellowstone is sadly coming to an end in late 2024, but, thankfully, the franchise will continue as Taylor Sheridan has several spinoffs and sequel series in motion (including one set to feature three of Yellowstone’s main cast members). The Paramount Network neo-Western drama, created by Sheridan and John Linson, debuted in June 2018 and slowly but surely became one of the most talked about shows on TV. Due to its success, Paramount was persuaded to extend its working relationship with Sheridan, accounting for the various upcoming series in the Yellowstone universe.

Although fans might be sad that the parent series is ending after Yellowstone season 5, part 2, the good news is that Sheridan and Paramount still have many series in the works to look forward to. Some will continue taking viewers back in time to witness other generations of the Dutton family at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, while others will pick up where the original TV show leaves off at the end of its series finale. Whatever the case, each planned and reported Yellowstone spinoff is exciting for those who want more from the franchise, even after Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III is gone.

Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2
Release Date: November 10, 2024

Of course, before fans can look ahead to the various exciting Yellowstone spinoffs and sequel series, they must bid farewell to the original TV show. The Yellowstone season 5, part 1 finale was released on January 1, 2023, and part 2 will premiere almost two years later. The 2023 Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and Writers Guild of America (WGA) strikes and Kevin Costner’s exit from Yellowstone likely halted progress on the production of part 2. But the beginning of Yellowstone’s end will finally arrive on November 10, 2024, on the Paramount Network.

Paramount has not confirmed when the Yellowstone series finale will air. Since there are six episodes in part 2, though, the final hour may debut on December 15, 2024, if there are no breaks between episodes. So, viewers could know all the answers to Yellowstone’s most pressing questions, like the final result of Beth and Jamie’s feud and John Dutton’s fate, before the new year. However, only time will tell when fans can anticipate the Yellowstone series finale. Thankfully, they have had ample time to prepare to say goodbye to some characters during the neo-Western drama’s ending.

1923 Season 2
Release Date: 2025

Unlike 1883 (Yellowstone’s first spinoff), 1923 has earned itself a season 2 renewal, which is expected to arrive sometime in 2025. The Western drama TV series, created by Taylor Sheridan, follows one previous generation of the Dutton family living on the ranch in 1923 (as the title suggests). Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford lead the cast of 1923 as Cara and Jacob Dutton, the great-granduncle and great-grandaunt of John Dutton III. Together, they did not have any children, but Cara and Jacob raised Spencer (Kevin Costner’s character’s grandfather) and John Sr. (Spencer’s older brother) as their own.

Living in the 1920s in Montana certainly was not easy, and this generation of the Dutton family in 1923 underwent many obstacles, including droughts, Prohibition, sheepherders, the early stages of the Great Depression, and many other societal and economic issues. Their story will continue when 1923 season 2 is released. The cast (which includes two new members — Jennifer Carpenter as Mamie Fossett and Janet Montgomery as Hillary) and crew began filming the second season in early July 2024 and production is expected to last until September. So, a 2025 premiere is likely, but Paramount has yet to confirm a date.

1944
Release Date: TBA

Taylor Sheridan has another Yellowstone prequel series in store — 1944, which, as one could guess, will take place in 1944. Not much is known about the upcoming TV show as it was announced to be in development in February 2023, but the cast, premise, and everything in between is relatively a mystery. How 1923 season 2 ends should give the audience an indication of what might happen 21 years later at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, and fans should expect to see a handful of familiar faces in the Dutton family in the next prequel.

Given that the upcoming prequel will be set just 15 years before John III’s birth, it’s plausible that the baby version of Kevin Costner’s character could make an appearance in [ 1944 ].

Spencer and Alexandra Dutton are certainly candidates, meaning that John Dutton II (the couple’s son and John Dutton III’s father) might finally have a significant role in the Yellowstone TV shows. The odds are likely that John II will be a main character in 1944. But as for who will play him, Paramount has not disclosed that information (or any other cast members for that matter as the series is still in the pre-production stage).

Given that the upcoming prequel will be set just 15 years before John III’s birth, it’s plausible that the baby version of Kevin Costner’s character could make an appearance. Nothing has been confirmed, though, and it seems like Sheridan and the other Yellowstone producers have their sights set on other spinoffs taking place in this universe.

6666
Release Date: TBA

6666 is another one of the upcoming Yellowstone TV shows that not much is known about as Taylor Sheridan claimed that it was “on hold” in June 2023. Nevertheless, the premise is pretty obvious thanks to its name. 6666 will revolve around the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas (which is a real ranch in King County, Texas). As fans might recall, Jimmy Hurdstrom was sent to the Four Sixes Ranch in Yellowstone season 4. He decided to stay instead of returning to Montana after falling in love with the place and with a woman named Emily. So, Jimmy and Emily could easily reprise their roles in 6666.

Additionally, the spinoff will be set in the present day, but it’s unclear if it will take place after the events of the reportedly highly emotional Yellowstone series finale or sometime beforehand. However, Paramount has teased that the Yellowstone spinoff 6666’s story will explore the history of the Four Sixes Ranch, hinting at possible flashbacks. Per TV Guide, Paramount’s 6666 press release revealed:

“Founded when Comanches still ruled West Texas, no ranch in America is more steeped in the history of the West than the 6666. Still operating as it did two centuries before, and encompassing an entire county, the 6666 has inspired a new scripted series where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing. The 6666 is synonymous with the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and ultimately, where world-class cowboys are born and made.”

The Madison
Release Date: 2025

The Madison, which was previously titled 2024, will serve as an offshoot of Yellowstone and presumably feature an all-new cast. According to TVLine, the tentatively titled spinoff will reportedly chronicle Stacy Clyburn (a rich matriarch) and her family’s journey when they move from the glitz and glamour of New York City to the gritty and down-to-earth Montana after Stacy’s husband and brother-in-law’s deaths. The two men tragically died in a plane crash, and their deaths prompted the big move across the country. However, Paramount has yet to confirm this information concerning the upcoming Yellowstone TV series.

The cast of The Madison is shaping up to consist of Kurt Russell, Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams, and Beau Garrett. Pfieffer will presumably play Stacy in the show, while Russell, Adams, and Garrett’s roles are unknown. But, as mentioned above, nothing has been finalized as of the writing of this article as the actors are nearing deals concerning their involvement with the spinoff. Filming is reportedly scheduled to begin in late August 2024 in New York, Montana, and Texas, and The Madison is expected to premiere in 2025.

Yellowstone Sequel
Release Date: TBA

The last (known) upcoming Yellowstone spinoff is the unnamed sequel series featuring the likely returns of Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton, Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler, and Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton. Similar to The Madison, Paramount has kept relatively hush about Beth, Rip, and Kayce’s next show, but it will take place following the events of the Yellowstone season 5, part 2 finale. It will serve as a legitimate sequel series, and its story will presumably transpire at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch in Montana.

Unfortunately, the information surrounding the returns of Beth, Rip, and Kayce has not been confirmed by Taylor Sheridan or Paramount. So, only some of them or none of the three may be the main characters in the upcoming TV show. Fans should expect to see some familiar faces in the cast of the Yellowstone sequel series, though, seeing as it is a sequel. But the Yellowstone finale will determine the course of the next series in the franchise.
