These days, many people most identify actor Tom Selleck for his character on the hit CBS family cop drama “Blue Bloods.”

In this show, Selleck plays the character of New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan. He is just one member of a family who has dedicated himself to a career in law enforcement.

Selleck is also famous for playing another modern-day lawman. This lawman is Thomas Magnum, the title character of the hit 1980s series “Magnum, P.I.”

While the actor is known for these roles, he is also famous for playing characters in another genre – Westerns. And, during an interview with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation in 2016, the “Blue Bloods” star made it clear that acting in another Western is something he hopes to do at some point.

Selleck was prompted to talk about doing another Western by a fan who asked if there was a type of character wanted to play but had not had the chance to during his decades-long career.

“You know, I don’t have that kind of list. I really don’t,” Selleck explained. “I’d love to do another Western.”

Acting in Westerns is something that the “Blue Bloods” star is very comfortable with.

“It just became a part of me when I did a miniseries called ‘The Sacketts,’” Tom Selleck explained. “And I just said, you know, to take a line out of ‘Quigley Down Under’ that my friend, the late Alan Rickman said, ‘Maybe I was born in the wrong century.’”

According to IMDb, “The Sacketts” miniseries aired in 1979. Selleck played the character of Orrin Sackett in this show.

‘Blue Bloods’ Star Tom Selleck Said He ‘Loves Westerns’

Working in Westerns is something that is near and dear to the heart of “Blue Bloods” star Tom Selleck.

“I love Westerns,” the actor said. “I’d love to get back on a horse again.”

While doing another Western is on Selleck’s radar, he is more focused on bringing the work of the writers he works with to life.

“Other than that, I don’t know,” Selleck said of what’s in his future. “My job is to read somebody else’s work most of the time. And that’s certainly what I did in ‘Jesse (Stone)’ even. I read Bob Parker’s work and see if I fit in.”

The “Blue Bloods” star then shared his thoughts about how he approaches selecting projects.

“When you get in those deals and I’ve had them where you sign the deal and they announce the deal and the deal proceeds the material, I’ve never had any success with that. I’ve had some failures with that because it’s backwards. …” Selleck said. “Then it becomes what do you want to do and now you’re not the guy reading somebody else’s heartfelt material where you go, ‘I can fit in here or ‘I don’t belong there.’”
