Roberts left “Bonanza” after the 1964-65 season, appearing in 202 episodes. Attempts to replace Roberts’ spot would include having actors Barry Coe and Guy Williams, known for roles on “Zorro” and “Lost in Space,” be in episodes. It didn’t work out.
Other stars who found themselves as cast members on “Bonanza” included David Canary, Mitch Vogel, and Tim Matheson.
“Bonanza” suffered a huge loss when Dan Blocker died in May 1972 after gall bladder surgery. No one ever could fill his shoes and show producers just killed the character of Hoss Cartwright off the show.
Its last episode aired on NBC on Jan. 16, 1973. The lasting images of the Ponderosa and the Cartwrights remain indelible on the hearts of this show’s fans. Their legion is worldwide and it will continue to grow year after year.
