A drama starring Helen Mirren has been blasted for its ‘senselessly horrific’ torture and rape scenes – with disgusted viewers raging ‘I won’t watch another moment!’.
The second season of 1923 dropped on Paramount Plus last month with episodes released weekly
A prequel show to Yellowstone, 1923 follows Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) as they try to protect their beloved ranch.
The pair end up raising Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and John Dutton (James Badge Dale), as they’re unable to have their own children.
In the new season, Jacob and Cara are at odds with sheepherder Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) and evil businessman Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton).
However, viewers have been left disgusted by some of the deeply upsetting sexual abuse scenes in the new series.
In one instance, Spencer helps a male friend who has been raped by a man during the night.
Other disturbing scenes show Donald keep two sex workers – Lindy (Madison Elise Rogers) and Christy (Cailyn Rice) – in his property.
The wealthy businessman makes them engage in horrific acts, including holding Christy inside a cupboard tied up and getting Lindy to torture and rape her.
Some viewers took to social media to express their disgust at the upsetting scenes.
One posted on X: ‘I seriously don’t think I can keep watching #1923. Rape, torture, it’s disgusting #ParamountPlus.’;
‘Season 2 of 1923 starts out horribly. It’s a disgusting episode. I’m out.’;
‘No I really don’t need to see another second of Whitfield abusing young women to understand he’s villain or to understand there’s a conflict brewing with Banner.
‘There are plenty of plot threads to keep up with in this show #1923 season 2.’;
‘Will not be watching another moment of season 2 of 1923. The gratuitous violence and depravity shark got jumped in the first 15 minutes.
‘How any of these actors could put their names on something as senselessly horrific as this is astounding. It is so bad.’;
‘I turned it off that show is perverted.’
It comes as viewers complained after a recent episode that Spencer and Alexandra’s (Julia Schlaepfer) story wasn’t progressing enough.
Fans were not shy about going on social media to express their opinions about both aspects of Sunday’s new episode.
Early in the episode, Elizabeth heads to the chicken coop to gather more eggs, though she’s shocked to find several bloodied and dead chickens.
She quickly finds the source of this – a bloodthirsty wolf, snarling at her and ultimately lunging at her as she quickly tries to escape.
The episode ends with the wolf snarling at the rifle-toting Cara, lunging at her as she fires the rifle, though fans weren’t sure if Cara managed to survive or not.
