Donnie Wahlberg is hopeful that a Blue Bloods spinoff could make its way to television in the near future.

“It’s been discussed,” Donnie, 55, exclusively tells Closer of a possible continuation of the hit CBS series. “I’m sure it’s been discussed in multiple formats and multiple areas with multiple people.”

The New Kids on the Block member hopes that if there is a Blue Bloods spinoff, it would keep the same integrity and focus on family that the show has had throughout all 14 seasons.

“But you know whatever’s going to happen with the spinoff is going to have to be done thoughtfully and carefully,” he says. “That’s quite a legacy to live up to after Blue Bloods. And if the show doesn’t carry on some of those magical elements of Blue Bloods, then I think it would be a disservice to the show. So, it’s really just it’s being talked about.”

While fans wait and see if a spinoff is officially announced by CBS or another network, Donnie is celebrating his newest project, hosting a new season of the series Very Scary People. The true crime show is a hit in its own right.

“I think for season 6, we wanted to try a slightly different approach,” he explains. “The show is still very much the same show. It’s covering the same topics. But I think we’re trying to give a little more voice to survivors, victims and, you know, the victims’ families, people impacted.”

“It’s always been a delicate tightrope doing this show and not wanting to glorify depraved individuals who do horrific things,” he adds. “But we want to tell the stories. And we think the best way to do that is to also give voice to some people who are close and impacted. It will be a difference in the show this season for sure. And I think it adds a lot more motion to the show.”

Before the season 6 premiere of Very Scary People, Donnie’s fans will celebrate Danny Reagan’s legacy in the series finale of Blue Bloods on Friday, December 13, on CBS at 10 p.m. ET.

Ahead of the series finale, Donnie has been moved by all of the support from his fans who have tried to rally and save Blue Bloods from going off the air.

“A lot of the fans of Blue Bloods are loyal New Kids on the Block fans or Blockheads who’ve been supporting me for 40 years. And it doesn’t surprise me,” the Massachusetts native shares. “It just fills my heart that they would be so supportive in every way.”

“I really appreciate them,” Donnie says of his loyal fan base. “I know it’s sad for them that the show is going away, but I know there’ll be other things coming along that they’ll be able to enjoy. And so, while I share their sadness, it’s my way to look forward. I’m the type of person that looks forward to the next endeavor. And I look back with gratitude, but I look forward with hope.”

Tune in to Very Scary People on Sunday, December 15, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ID.
