Blue Bloods showrunner Kevin Wade has caught wind of all of the speculation surrounding the big death in the show’s upcoming series finale. And he has some thoughts!
He sat down with TV Insider on Friday, December 6, where he teased what’s to come in the program’s final episode. The interviewer specifically referenced photos that were released weeks ahead of the series finale that showed the Reagan family attending a funeral.
So which character will be getting the axe? Wade had an interesting answer without spoiling too much for viewers ahead of the finale two episodes airing on television.
“To sound highfalutin, and forgive me for that, one of the guiding principles of the show’s storytelling over most of its life — and as we went on, it sharpened — is that every victory has to come with a loss,” Wade told the outlet about how the funeral will impact the finale. “It’s as simple as that. The stories that were most moving we found were where, yes, the Reagans individually or collectively had a victory, but it came at a cost.”
After the character’s death plays out on the screen, viewers can expect a “satisfying ending for all the Reagans.”
“It’s a family individually and collectively who deal with loss and loneliness and good versus bad,” he said. “You know, the sun doesn’t come out and all the stuff that they deal with goes away, that would not be true to 14 years of storytelling. But our hope is that it is satisfying for the audience.”
As we previously reported, the characters who are confirmed to be in attendance at the funeral based on photos are, Frank Reagan, Danny Reagan, Jamie Reagan, Eddie Janko-Reagan, Maria Baez, Erin Reagan, Jack Boyle, Mayor Peter Chase, Garrett Moore and Henry Reagan.
We think it’s pretty safe to assume all of the Reagan’s survive the events of the final two episodes of the series based on Wade’s comments. It seems like other side characters might be the ones who are in trouble.
Wade also provided a full breakdown of what will happen in the finale leading up to the big funeral. The interviewer mentioned that the series finale will start off with the “shocking murder of a judge.”
“In the first act, we see violent crimes and attempted murders, which don’t seem at all connected until Assistant District Attorney Erin Reagan [Bridget Moynahan] and [her investigator] Anthony [Steve Schrippa] are played a recording that will make clear that the crimes are an orchestrated effort to create chaos in New York City,” he said. “Then it becomes the Reagans’ job — police commissioner Frank [Tom Selleck], detective Danny [Donnie Wahlberg], sergeant Jamie [Will Estes] and patrol Eddie [Vanessa Ray] — along with Erin and Anthony, to haul in all the nets and find out if they can solve the crimes.”
“Gang leader Carlo Ramirez [Manny Perez], who had to flee the country, is integral to the criminal plot,” Wade continued. “He has a very identifiable objective of vengeance and comes back to wreak havoc and reclaim his child.”
Whatever happens, it’s sure going to be a nail-biter of a finale!
The Blue Bloods series finale will air on Friday, December 13, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
