Kevin Costner essayed the role of Jonathan Kent in Zack Snyder’s DCEU, appearing in Man of Steel. Jonathan Kent’s death sequence has been a sore spot for fans for quite some time, even with the DCEU completely abandoned by WB, who see themselves moving on to James Gunn’s DCU.
The actor revealed how he felt when he realized that he was in a superhero film, but did not get to play a superhero or do anything ‘cool’. Under Zack Snyder, the DCEU had a grim flavor that favored the kind of storytelling that resonated with some fans but failed to impress others.
Kevin Costner was very disappointed with his role in a superhero film
Despite being part of perhaps one of the biggest franchises out of Hollywood for a time, Costner was not very happy with the role that he had received in a superhero film. Speaking with Cinemablend, the actor revealed:
It’s just my luck to be in a superhero movie and be the only person that’s normal. I was like, ‘Really? I can’t fly? And I can’t put my first through the wall? Maybe I should have read this thing closer. I’m a farmer?’ So I looked at that and I said, ‘Ok, I can be that.’ I thought it was rooted in doubt. But there was no doubt that he puts his hand up and says, ‘Stay there’ to his son.

The scene mentioned by Kevin Costner remains one of the most controversial moments of the film, given that it saw Jonathan Kent sacrifice himself to keep Clark’s identity a secret. Given the manner in which the character is scaled in the DCEU, a lot of fans argued that Clark could have saved his father without outing himself as Superman, making the sacrifice on Pa Kent’s part rather odd.
The DCU seems to be ready to move on from the DCEU
Even though the DCEU managed to create a shared universe of superheroes that appealed to fans, studio meddling, and a lackluster structure cost WB a great opportunity to create a franchise that could rival Star Wars, The Wizarding World, and the MCU.
However, with James Gunn’s DCU becoming the new hot property that WB focuses on, the DCEU seems completely closed, for now. Peacemaker, which Gunn helmed, will be carrying over from the DCEU to the DCU along with Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
