To steal a line from the Game of Thrones spinoff…the new teaser trailer for Yellowstone season 5’s final episodes knows the cold, hard truth: the only thing that can tear down the House of Dutton is itself.
The first footage from the long-awaited batch of episodes for season 5, part 2 arrived Friday morning in the form of a 30-second preview. It begins with Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, who we know won’t be participating in these next installments. Still, his character seems to be involved in some capacity.
“Legacy,” he says. “If you build something worth having, someone’s going to try and take it.”
The sneak peek then pivots to focus on his children. Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) ominously tells his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), “What I’m doing isn’t for the ranch, it’s for us.” We then see him trying to look incognito in his black Carhartt hoodie with his hand around some weapon hidden within.
The fate of the ranch, it seems, is still in jeopardy. Lloyd Pierce (Forrie J. Smith), one of the older Dutton cowboys, appears to be preparing for the worst. “I spent my whole life here,” he tells Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), who responds, “Me too.”
And, of course, siblings Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) are fighting, but even that appears to be escalating. “If you destroy me, you destroy yourself,” he warns some one over the phone amid footage of an F.B.I. office raid and Beth slapping the s— out of him. “Unlike you, I keep my promises,” she warns back.
Yellowstone will kick off the remaining episodes of season 5 on Sunday, Nov. 10 on the Paramount Network, which will be a pivotal moment for fans of the show for multiple reasons.
Costner, who’s been a staple of Yellowstone since the beginning, confirmed in June that he would not be involved in season 5B, leading many to believe his character might be killed off in some capacity amid the story’s ongoing Dutton dynasty war.
“I just want to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on Horizon and doing all the things that that’s required, and thinking about Yellowstone, that beloved series that I love, that I know you love, I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue season 5B or into the future,” Costner said in a video statement posted to social media at the time. “It was something that really changed me. I loved it and I know you loved it. And I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning. I love the relationship that we’ve been able to develop, and I’ll see you at the movies.”
On top of that, when the future seemed bleak for the hit Western series, there’s now talk of the mothership Yellowstone show continuing on. However, those talks are in early stages and nothing is official yet. Will the Duttons ride on into the sunset, or is there a bright future on the horizon? We’ll likely learn more clues once these episodes debut.
