Kurt Russell was heavily rumored to be part of Yellowstone spinoff The Madison, but after the most recent update, it appears our hopes to see him return to the Western genre may be dashed. Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe has become a TV juggernaut, with a few spinoffs already hitting screens and others on the way. One of those is The Madison, the one upcoming Yellowstone spinoff in development that is furthest along and has already begun casting.
Production for The Madison is expected to start shooting this month in various locations including, of course, Montana, as well as Texas and New York. The expectation is that it will air sometime in 2025, picking up the Yellowstone torch after the fifth and final season of the flagship series ends, but it doesn’t yet have an announced release date. It’s not yet clear if any of the Dutton family actors from Yellowstone will make an appearance in the spinoff, which is also set in the current era, but that’s not the only unclear aspect of The Madison’s cast.
Yellowstone Spinoff, The Madison, Cast Doesn’t Include Kurt Russell
It Doesn’t Bode Well For His Continued Involvement
The Yellowstone prequel show, The Madison, announced a slew of new cast members – Kurt Russell, however, isn’t among them. The new casting announcement confirmed Suits star Patrick J. Adams, who had been previously rumored. The other names announced were Beau Garrett, Amiah Miller, and Elle Chapman. Before that, the show had confirmed a huge name with Michelle Pfeiffer as the first confirmed member of The Madison’s cast. Suspiciously, however, Kurt Russell, who has been long rumored to be part of the spinoff, wasn’t among the confirmed new cast members.
Considering this, the chances of Russell being part of the cast have significantly decreased. This only adds to confusion about the show, as it indicates the main male role opposite Michelle Pfeiffer still hasn’t been filled. Originally, Matthew McConaughey was rumored to be starring in the Yellowstone spinoff back when it was still titled 2024. After it got the new name of The Madison, however, Kurt Russell’s name was swirling around the role. While it’s entirely possible Russell could still be attached to the project, as of now, that role remains unfilled, a big gap for the series’ cast.
What Kurt Russell’s The Madison Role Could Have Been
Perhaps He Could Have Been A Descendant Of The Duttons
Reportedly, The Madison’s story will revolve around a woman named Stacy Clyburn, who moves her family from New York City to Montana after the death of her husband and brother-in-law in a plane crash. It’s expected that Pfeiffer will be playing Stacy Clyburn, leading to questions of who Kurt Russell could be – or could have been – playing. It’s possible that he could be playing Stacy Clyburn’s late husband, and so his role would be told only through flashbacks. That would be a waste of a big name, though, so it’s more likely that Russell would be playing someone already in Montana – perhaps a ranch owner and an acquaintance of the Duttons, or even a new love interest for Stacy. It will be interesting to see how the Yellowstone spinoff ultimately fills that role.
