Blue Bloods may be ending, but CBS isn’t quite ready to call it quits on the beloved brand. CBS Studios President David Stapf recently teased a possible extension in the franchise that would keep the focus on one or more members of the Reagan family.

Speaking with Deadline, CBS Studios President David Stapf confirmed that there have been discussions about extending Blue Bloods on CBS with a spinoff series. One centered around Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan was reportedly pitched but did not end up getting the greenlight. “We don’t have anything that’s going to be in development soon but it’s a brand, a title and a show that is beloved,” Stapf said.”We’ve got to get it right so we’re taking our time and trying to figure it out, okay, what is the next iteration of Blue Bloods? We have a whole season to go where we intend to celebrate it all season long as to how good that show is, so there’s still time for us to figure that out.”

What Is Blue Bloods About?

Created by Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, Blue Bloods premiered in September 2010 on CBS. The long-running police procedural drama series is set in New York City and follows members of the Reagan family, a Catholic, Irish-American family with a history of working in law enforcement. Tom Selleck leads the main cast as New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, with Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, and Will Estes portraying his character’s adult children. Len Cariou, Marisa Ramirez, and Vanessa Ray also star.

In November 2023, CBS announced that Blue Bloods would end after Season 14. The first 10 episodes aired on the network from February to May 2024, with the final eight episodes set to air this fall. While most of the Blue Bloods cast have been vocal about their displeasure at CBS opting to end the series, with Ray posting on Instagram that wrapping production for the last time “hurts,” former series regular Jennifer Esposito has a different opinion. She shared in June 2024 that it is “smart to end it now,” noting that “everything has to come to an end.”

When CBS announced that Blue Bloods would not be returning for a fifteenth season, Selleck released a statement thanking the network, cast, crew, and fans for keeping the show alive for more than a decade. “For the past 13 years it has been an honor and a privilege to work on a show that not only celebrates the men and women who protect and serve in New York City, but also displayed the importance of family,” the statement read. “Working alongside these incredible actors, writers, producers, directors and crew has been a dream come true and I’m grateful to have been a part of this extraordinary group for over 275 episodes. Thank you to CBS Studios and the CBS network for their steadfast support, and we offer heartfelt gratitude to the fans who gathered with us for dinner every Friday night.”

The final eight episodes of Blue Bloods will air on CBS from October 2024 to December 2024.
