Following the 1923 season 1 finale, star Brandon Sklenar teased changes to Spencer Dutton in season 2. After bumping into Alex’s (Julia Schlaepfer) ex-fiancee Arthur (Rafe Soule) before boarding a steam liner, the couple did their best to avoid a confrontation with the scorned British elite. However, after Alex demands to dine in the main hall, Arthur challenges Spencer to a duel with swords. The clash leaves Arthur dead, Spencer removed from the ship, and Alex alone.

Speaking with TV Guide, Sklenar teased how Spencer will be changed in 1923 season 2. The actor explains the effect season 1 finale’s dramatic conclusion will have on Spencer, driving his actions on the next leg of his journey home. Sklenar addressed the compounding “guilt” Spencer feels and how that will dictate what he does next. Read what the actor said about his character in 1923 season 2 below:

“Oh, completely fractured. Yeah, the effect that it has on him is tremendous, and it changes him. And when we see him again—I don’t know where it is or how it’s gonna go down, but I do know that he’s going to be a different Spencer, a different kind of guy, because the amount of guilt and shame that he’s already dealing with from the war and not having seen his family for so long…

“He’s already processing all that, and now he ultimately blames himself for what went down. Arthur’s dead, he may never see Alex again. He’s now even further from [his family]. He doesn’t know how he’s going to get there. He’s thinking that by the time he gets there, they could all be dead. Alex could be dead. He’s literally lost everything, and he’s fueled by his guilt and shame and anger, and that’s about it. So he’s in a place, for sure.”

What to Expect from Spencer in 1923 Season 2

The 1923 season finale sees Alex’s friend Jennifer (Jo Ellen Pellman) come to Alex’s aid and back up Spencer’s claim that Arthur drew a pistol during their duel, confirming that Arthur’s death is the result of Spencer acting in self-defense. However, Spencer still finds himself removed from the ship at the nearest port with Alex confined to her quarters. With the help of Jennifer, Alex makes her way to the nearest balcony to see Spencer in a dinghy as he’s taken away by the Navy. Alex vows to travel to Montana to rendezvous with him. However, due to their distance apart, Spencer does not hear her.

Although Spencer will find himself alone once again when 1923 returns for season 2, he will be determined to reunite with his wife. Spencer may try to catch up with the ship when it reaches London, however, he will likely be too late due to the distance he needs to cover. Knowing that Alex still has his letters with his home address, Spencer may deduce that Alex will head to Montana as that is still Spencer’s final destination.

With Alex far ahead of Spencer on the journey, she will arrive in the United States before him and may meet with Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren), finding herself involved with the family drama before Spencer returns. She may end up being the Dutton’s savior in regard to the money the family owes to Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton), calling upon her own family in England to assist. So far, no announcement regarding when 1923 season 2’s return has been made.
