Octavia Spencer is celebrating the birthday of her Hidden Figures cast Kevin Costner.
The actress, 53, who played the role of Dorothy Vaughn alongside Costner’s portrayal of Al Harrison in the 2016 biographical drama film, penned a sweet birthday message to Costner on his 69th birthday on Thursday.
“🎈🥳🎂🎉This is THE one person who can call me and say, ‘please don’t be offended but I need you to play a potted plant. She’s integral to the story. It’ll all make sense. I promise,’” Spencer began in her Instagram caption, which was posted alongside several images of the two actors together.
“My response would be, ‘ooh honey, you know I’m claustrophobic. So not too much top soil. And make sure the gardener is GORGEOUS and that he sings to me.’” she added. “Kevin, I was a fan before I was a colleague, but it goes without saying I will always love you and all that you contribute to our industry.”
She then thanked the actor and filmmaker for “being the most generous producer and scene partner I’ve ever worked with,” adding, “I know you love westerns. I can’t ride a horse but I’ll be happy to pretend to just to play with you again!”
“Happy birthday Kevin @kevincostnermodernwest! 🎉🎂🥳🎈,” she concluded her message. “(And peep the edge control I’ve got going on in the first photo 😂💁🏾♀️).”
In the first photo Spencer posted, the two actors looked at a script together while on the set, while a second black and white snap showed the friends posed for a more formal shot.

Holding onto Costner’s arm as he sat in a chair, Spencer flashed a smile at the camera while standing beside him. The pair posed together on the red carpet in the third picture in the carousel, with Costner resting his head on Spencer’s.
In the final snap, the duo gathered for a shot while dressed up in a classic black suit and green gown.
Meanwhile, Costner also shared a birthday post to celebrate his 69th year. The Yellowstone star posted a black and white photo of his younger self wearing a hat and a collared shirt.
“Celebrating another year of life today and taking a moment to honor this kid who had big dreams. It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come,” Costner wrote.
“Thank you all for the birthday wishes. It’s because of your support that I’ve been able to chase my dreams all these years.”
