Brian Geraghty, who plays Zane Davis in the Yellowstone prequel, 1923, teases a big showdown between the Duttons and Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton). In season 2, episode 4, Whitfield pitches investors about building a winter resort in Montana. However, with the Dutton family, led by Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara (Dame Helen Mirren), owning the land Whitfield plans on developing, this causes a problem between the ranch owner and the series’ main villain. Meanwhile, Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) have both encountered numerous roadblocks on their way to the ranch.
In an interview with ScreenRant for 1923 season 2, episode 4, Geraghty teases the upcoming major conflict between the Dutton family and Whitfield. The actor, whose character is a royal ranch foreman, shares that defeating Whitfield will “take everything we got and then some,” while Spencer can be helpful, but the uncertainty about the Dutton heir’s ability to arrive in time for his family makes him a wild car. On the other hand, Geraghty also indicates that it won’t take “an army” to stop Whitfield, teasing major developments for the rest of season 2. Check out his comments below:
I think it’s going to take everything we got and then some. Having Spencer will definitely be an asset, but will he make it back? The thing is that Spencer’s journey is so arduous and long, we’re like, “Will he come back and help out?” I think that’s what it takes. I don’t think it takes an army to defeat them.
I definitely think it’s worth watching. There’ll be a lot of satisfaction in the last couple of episodes for the audience. At least, there was for me as a reader [of the script]. I actually love the journey for Alex and Spencer. It’s really interesting, and I love the historical aspect of Alex coming in through Ellis Island and Spencer going through Galveston.
What Brian Geraghty’s Comment Means For 1923 Season 2
The Duttons Aren’t Going To Defeat Donald Whitfield With Force
Season 2 has offered a glimpse of Whitfield’s sinister side and what he’s capable of. While the man in power is certainly one to be feared, he also has a fatal weakness because of his flaws and ruthlessness. Geraghty’s comment hints that how the Duttons defended their land against Whitfield’s threats wasn’t with force, but through their wits. In the 1923 season 1 finale, Whitfield paid off the ranch’s tax debt, which could potentially lead to him taking over the ranch through legal channels.
While Spencer is known for his physical strength, Alex’s strength lies in her education and wisdom. At the same time, Whitfield’s right-hand man, Banner, could potentially play a key role in the conflict. As seen in 1923 season 2, episode 4, Banner has complicated feelings regarding how Whitfield plans to get rid of the Dutton family. It’s unclear at this point how this will play out. However, with investors showing overwhelming interest in Whitfield’s proposal, the gold mining tycoon will stop at nothing to get what he wants, which puts everyone at the Dutton ranch in grave danger.
Our Take On 1923 Season 2
Things Will Get Worse Before They Get Better In 1923 Season 2
1923 season 2 has been full of drama and intensity and has set Spencer up as a savior for the Dutton family. However, Geraghty’s comment casts doubt on the assumption. After the shout-out in Fort Worth, Spencer hops on a train heading West and jumps off after a conflict with the Tax Collector. Episode 4 puts him in the middle of nowhere while he attempts to continue his journey home on foot. Alex, on the other hand, is on a moving train. While she still has a long way ahead, she might arrive in Montana sooner than Spencer.
There’s also the possibility that Cara and Jacob Dutton may have to rely on the ones who are already at the ranch to defeat Whitfield. It seems that things are about to get a lot worse in the next couple of episodes, but based on Geraghty’s comment, season 2, which will also be the final season of 1923, will also show how the Duttons survive the attacks.
